Our Goal
We plan to create an engaging educational environment for your child as we work together to make learning a positive experience. Your involvement and consistent monitoring of his/her progress is a must in the success of your child. Please take an active role in his/her education and behavior. Your child should find school to be an exciting place for building a lifelong love of reading and learning. We will have a productive year as your child learns the skills and accomplishes the goals of first grade!
Parent-Teacher Relationship
A good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. I will communicate with you in many ways throughout the year - Red School Folders, weekly newsletters, ClassDoJo, notes, telephone calls, mid-quarter progress reports, quarterly report cards, and parent-teacher conferences. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. You can send a note in the Red School Folder, leave a message in the office at 251-602-8930, or email me at dday@saralandboe.org. I am available for conferences regarding your child's progress during my planning time or after school - by appointment only. Good communication between parents and teachers is a very important key to a successful academic year. Again, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Red School Folder
Your child will bring home a red folder each day. He/She will be responsible for bringing home and returning the folder. If this folder is lost or misplaced, it will be your responsibility to provide a new one. The folder will contain:
- Calendar - A monthly calendar will be in the left pocket of the Red School Folder. Please do not remove it. Your child's behavior will be recorded daily. A green smiley face means your child was on task. I will make a note of any behavioral situations that need your attention and encouragement. Please initial the calendar daily.
- Newsletter - You will receive a parent Newsletter each Monday that will inform you of important dates and upcoming events. The Newsletter will also include a list of the skills for the week and the Spelling Words and Red Words for the week.
- Optional Homework - Each Monday, you will find an extra reading practice packet that you may choose to use to help your child at home. As we progress through the year, this packet will change to meet our current skills. You will always receive brief instructions so you will know how to use any new task to help your child. Homework should not be returned to the teacher. This practice is really for you to use at home as you and I work together to help your child reach full potential during the year. It is my hope that you find lots of joy as you listen to and read with your child while using these materials. Please read other books too! The more, the better! :)
- Class Work - I try to check all students' papers for understanding, however, I may not check every problem. Please review this work with your child. This will help keep you informed of your child's progress. All papers, except the calendar, are to be kept at home so that the Red School Folder remains neat and tidy.
- Money/Notes - Please send any notes, forms, or money in the Red School Folder. All checks must have a printed street address and include your phone number and child's name on the front of the check. Always send money in a sealed envelope with the following information written on the front:
- Child's first and last name
- Amount
- Purpose for the money (snack, etc)
- Teacher's Name
Transportation-VERY IMPORTANT
If you change your child's mode of transportation, even for just one day, you must send a parent signed handwritten note with instructions. Do not rely on your child to tell me the information. Also, do not expect that I will receive an email or Remind message from you with the information. Many days, I do not have a chance to check digital communication while I have students in the classroom. If you have an emergency during the day and need to change transportation plans, you must call the office and they will communicate the change to our classroom. If a note is not received, your child will be sent home by his/her usual method of transportation. This is for your child's safety and is strictly enforced.
Tests
You will receive a packet of information regarding first grade tests. All first grade teachers give the same tests, but not all tests are given on the same day by all teachers. Sometimes, special events or schedules affect our preparation time. One class may be ready to test on a particular skill in a particular subject and another class may need a little longer to prepare. In our class, most Reading and Spelling tests will be given on Friday. Again, that may change if we have a special event during the week, such as Fall Festival or a Field Trip. I try very hard not to give too many tests in one day, so we try to take other tests on other days of the week. We always review before a test. Scores are posted in PowerSchool as soon as possible so that you will be able to see your child's grades and keep up with current averages. Parents are always welcome to schedule a conference to see tests and discuss their child's academic progress. We will not send any copies of any tests home.
Snack
Please send an appropriate snack for your child every day. Carbonated drinks, candy, and gum are not allowed. Capri Suns, juice box type drinks, water, or drinks in small plastic containers are ideal. Students will be allowed to purchase snack for $1.00. Snack may be purchased one day at a time and with exact change. We do not have change in the classroom.
Ice Cream Snack Choices:
Fudge Bar, Strawberry Crunch, Sour Cherry, Chocolate Crunch
Chip Snack Choices:
Cheetos, Doritos, Sour Cream and Onion, BBQ
Please send a snack or snack money with your child. It is very sad when a child doesn't have something while others are eating.
Birthdays
Birthdays are special occasions for children. We will celebrate your child's special day in the classroom. Please let me know ahead of time if you would like to send a birthday snack so that I can set aside a little extra snack time.
Classroom Rules
Our classroom and school rules will be explained to your child. A well-disciplined and attentive child is a must for learning. Please work with me to ensure a successful student. As mentioned above, the calendar in the Red School Folder will be a place where we will communicate daily behavior.
Attendance
In the case of a student's absence, a handwritten parent note or Doctor's note should be sent within three days in order to be excused. Attendance is required by law. Frequent, unexcused absences are not acceptable and hinder your child's academic progress. Students are allowed only ten parent excused absences. Any additional absences are considered unexcused. Please remember that school begins at 8:00 a.m. and students are considered tardy if they are not in the classroom at 8:15 a.m. Attendance is essential to learning, as well as being prompt.
I am eager to get to know you and your child! Saraland Early Education Center is an excellent place to learn, and I look forward to a productive year as your child learns the skills and accomplishes the goals of first grade!
