The art classes taught at Saraland High School follow standards set by the Alabama Department of Education for fine art in high school. Art I studio classes are designed to improve basic drawing skills through the discipline of practice, using hand-eye coordination and learning the art of "seeing". Advanced studio classes expand skills and begin focusing on wet media, color theory, and cognitive problem-solving skills.
Students do not need previous experience with studio art to be successful in the class. The courses are based on following directions, working to potential, and completion of assignments. All 'in-class projects' are done under supervision and are not intended to be worked on at home. Art I students are expected to complete two homework sketches most weeks to improve basic skills. Sketches are a substantial part of a student's grade. All sketches along with detailed instructions and visual resources can be found on Schoology. Sketches are posted and remain on the board throughout the week. Advanced classes also have weekly sketches due, which begin incorporating drawing and problem-solving skills.
It is important to note, students earn a grade in the class. In past years, elective classes may have had different standards with students receiving basically a pass or fail grade. This is not the case at Saraland High School. Students are expected to work to his or her potential to earn a grade.
Advanced art classes are designed for students who actually like and want to improve their art skills. The work is designed to be challenging. Advanced Art classes work almost exclusively with wet (paint) to complete projects. Expanded concepts, including color theory, art history, research, and a variety of media will be explored in advanced classes. Advanced art classes are not recommended for students who did not work to their fullest potential in Art I.
